A Movoto list has given Grand Rapids residents yet another ranking to brag about. The latest reason? It’s a fun place to live. The real estate blog ranked Grand Rapids eighth in its list of top 10 most exciting mid-sized cities. The list evaluated 117 cities with populations between 120,000 and 210,000 residents on six factors per capita: nightlife, live music venues, active outdoor options, fast food restaurants (the fewer the better), percentage of restaurants that are fast food (the lower the better), percentage of residents age 20-34 (higher the better). Movoto compiled information from business listings and Census data but cautions that its criteria aren’t completely scientific. Grand Rapids followed behind Fort Lauderdale, and its ranking surprised the data collectors, according to the blog post.
“The second-largest city in Michigan, it did best in nightlife (14th overall) and non-fast food dining (18th),” the blog reads.
The list says there’s one nightlife option for every 771 residents, naming HopCat and Founders Brewing as examples. In the dining category, Movoto gives a nod to Yesterdog and Stella’s Lounge.
Providence, R.I., was rated the most exciting mid-sized city. Other places on the list include Charleston, S.C., Fort Collins, Colo., and Syracuse, N.Y.
